Skin Cancer

Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world.
Early detection of skin cancers and other skin lesions decreases the likelihood of surgery or other invasive treatments.

The Ramsay Street Medical Centre is committed to skin cancer diagnosis, treatment, prevention and education.  We recommend regular skin checks as well as talking to your doctor about your level of risk.

Within Ramsay Street Medical Centre we offer a superior, non-surgical and non-invasive procedure known as Photodynamic Therapy.

PDT is a revolutionary treatment, safely clearing multiple cancerous and pre-cancerous lesions from a large area of skin in just one treatment. In the case of severe sun damage in the form of sunspots or solar keratosis or more advanced skin lesions two treatments however, may be required.

PDT is a unique field treatment that destroys abnormal cells without damaging healthy skin cells. PDT achieves this result by exposing the skin to a light sensitive solution (ALA activator), coupled with LED light treatment. Once a large area is exposed to the light treatment, we can then identify any resistant lesions, and apply further treatments including excisions if needed. PDT can be applied to most parts of the body including face, chest and hands. By extension PDT is also an effective treatment for acne.

What makes PDT superior, as opposed to other skin cancer treatments such as Efudex and Cryotherapy? Efudex applies cytotoxic to all cells, resulting in the damage of both bad and consequently healthy cells. Similarly, cryotherapy can create deep burns and severe depigmentation, damaging clients’ otherwise healthy skin often leaving them with white, blotches.

Unlike aforementioned treatments, photodynamic therapy achieves dual selectivity, minimizing damage to adjacent healthy structures. While some patients experience brief stinging and redness, the complete recovery time is usually 1 week. As the damaged skin sheds, over the course of that recovery time patients are encouraged to avoid exposing the treated area to sunlight.

PDT can be used to treat anyone regardless of age, gender or skin type. Currently our treatments are administered by the practice’s Medical Director, Dr Anita LoMascolo. Indeed, Dr LoMascolo’s extensive resume and desire to provide patients suffering from skin cancer with a solution that doesn’t leave them scarred or in any further pain, ensures a safe and successful experience.

Photodynamic Therapy
Specialised treatments for sun damage, pigmentation & pre-cancerous skin conditions

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an effective treatment for patients who may have cancerous, precancerous or severe sun damage, including sunspots or solar keratosis.  The treatment can successfully treat large areas of skin, only destroying abnormal cells without damaging normal skin.

The therapy uses a light sensitive solution (ALA), coupled with LED light treatment. Some patients experience stinging and redness.  Skin flaking will occur in the days following the treatment and patients should avoid sun exposure.

Acne
Treatments tailored to individual needs

Acne is a common skin condition that affects around 85% of teenagers and around 50% of adults. Acned skin has a combination of features these include excessive sebaceous fluid, clogging of the skin’s pores (medically known as keratin in the sebaceous follicles), and an accumulation of bacteria.

In some cases there may be underlying factors including diet, hormonal imbalances and environmental effects or undiagnosed skin conditions.

Acne can be categorised

  1. comedonal, with excessive plugging,
  2. cystic, with large accumulations of sebaceous fluid,
  3. pustular, with significant bacterial overgrowth.

Our medical practitioner, Dr Anita LoMascolo, can outline a personalised multi-faceted treatment program and homecare regime that corrects and strengthens acne-prone and acne scarred skin. We provide a range of options that included targeted treatment for inflammatory acne to the more severe cystic acne.  Treatments include prescription items and, for severe acne, photodynamic therapy.
