Are you at Risk of Developing Type 2 Diabetes?
If you have a family history of diabetes, are over the age of 45 and are overweight, particularly around the waist, then your likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes in the next 5 years is greatly increased.
Type 2 diabetes affects 85-90% of all people with diabetes and while it is more common in older adults, more and more young people, including children, are developing this largely avoidable ‘life style’ disease.
Diabetes Australia estimates that up to 60% of type 2 diabetes can be prevented. Those at risk can delay or even prevent this disease by maintaining a healthy diet and weight, undertaking regular physical activity and not smoking.
It is important to diagnose and properly manage type 2 diabetes as it can result in long term health complications, including heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure and circulation.
If you believe that you are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes you can download Diabetes Australia’s risk assessment tool. If you score over 12 points you should contact The Ramsay Street Medical Centre and let the reception staff know that you would like to arrange an appointment for to have a fasting blood glucose test.
