Childhood, Adult and Travel Vaccination Programs

The Ramsay Street Medical Centre provides an immunisation service that includes childhood, adult and travel vaccinations.

Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way of protecting children against certain diseases. The risks of these diseases are far greater than the very small risks of immunisation.  It’s estimated that vaccination currently saves approximately three million lives each year worldwide. Routine childhood immunisations are given to provide protection against 13 diseases:

  • diphtheria
  • haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib)
  • hepatitis B
  • measles
  • meningococcal C
  • mumps
  • whooping cough (pertussis)
  • pneumococcal disease
  • polio (poliomyelitis)
  • rotaviral gastroenteritis
  • rubella (German measles)
  • tetanus
  • chickenpox (varicella)

Most of these diseases can cause serious complications and sometimes death.  It is also recommended that children at risk receive the seasonal influenza vaccination.

It is important for adults to ensure on-going protection against preventable diseases such as measles mumps & rubella (MMR) and whooping cough. Other recommended vaccinations include:

  • Hepatitis B: You may need a primary course of 3 vaccines or just a booster to maintain good immunity.
  • Pneumococcal Disease:  A single dose of pneumococcal vaccine is recommended for adults at 65 years of age.
  • Influenza: An annual seasonal influenza vaccination is recommended for any person aged 6 months and over who wishes to reduce the likelihood of becoming ill with influenza

The Ramsay Street doctors can help you prepare for your overseas holiday.  It is important that you visit your doctor well in advance of your trip as some vaccinations need to  given over a 3 or 6 months time frame before departure.
